About Me
Hello! I’m Wen. I’ve been on Planet Earth for .
With the time I’ve had on this planet, I spent the first 18 years in my hometown in China. Then I went to Beijing for college, where I studied Hydropower Engineering. I’ve always wanted to see the bigger world even as a kid, so I did. I landed in the US for the first time in 2008, and spent two years in Portland, Oregon for graduate school, where I did research on climate change impact on drought and precipitation. There I learned two important skills which embarked my two career journeys so far. The first is GIS, where I used to make many environmental planning maps for various urban planning projects. The second is coding. At that time, we used MATLAB and R, but that’s what gave me the much-needed false confidence to pursue data science after working as an environmental engineer for 6 years.
This year marks the 10th year of me working as a data scientist. During my time on Planet Earth, many interests come and go, but a few things stayed: my love for astronomy, wildlife, piano, and recently Taichi. I also discovered three vessels which help me contain the various experiences I’ve encountered along the way – coding, writing, and YouTube.
Along my journey, many people have inspired me. Jane Goodall is my childhood and forever idol! I met Jane Goodall in 2019 and I have a book signed by her which I’ll treasure for life. I hope to use my voice to raise awareness on rainforest and wildlife conservation. Planet Earth would be so boring if humans were the only animal left here.
